It is becoming increasingly apparent that brand image is becoming increasingly important in SEO, as well as Internet Marketing in general.

Social media is a huge part of this, and with so many social media tools at our disposal, it is getting much easier to help grow our businesses through social media integration.

However, as with all too many aspects of the Internet Marketing world, people are pushing the conversion rates without worrying about the damage it is doing to their brand.

Take today for instance.  I signed up to spotify. I had a UK account, which doesn’t work over here, and my wife wanted to send me a playlist.

Sure, great.  So I go to sign up, and then get told I need to use my Facebook to sign up.

I did it.

Then I thought to myself, no.

Fuck that shit, I don’t want to have my only log in choice be through Facebook, there is no reason to force me to do this other than to help them increase their brand recognition by telling people what  am listening to on Facebook.

I don’t want my life on display, nobody needs to know what I am listening to.

I don’t know how far Spotify are going to go with the social media connection I just gave them, and I don’t want to have to find out. I have now removed their connection.

Remember, this is what they ask for

  • Your e-mail address (oli@.com)
  • Your birthday
  • Permission to access your data when you’re offline
  • Permission to post to your timeline

This sounds simple enough, and sure they might need the email and birthday. But permission to access my data, basically means they can download everything about me. Permission to post on my timeline means they can advertise themselves on my wall.

No, just no.

Spotify, and every other company that does this, you have just caused irreparable brand damage in your relationship with me.

Even worse, some brands I had attributed a certain level of quality to do some insane amounts of data mining through your Facebook connection.

Udemy, a company  held in high regard, not only collects all my information in terms of likes, education, etc, but it also collects the personal data of my friends too.

Does this connection have any benefit for me? No.

These are just two recent examples of how brands have lost me in the last week alone. bad social media connections can hurt your brand.

If you are interested in improving your brand image through social media connections however, it can be done.

  • Collect the bare minimum of what you need to allow users to log n to your site.
  • Don’t auto post to the walls of people who connect to you, allow them the choice.
  • Provide sign up and log in options.
  • Make it clear that you do not store any information that you don’t need from a technical standpoint.

By making it so the user can opt in to the more aggressive areas of Facebook connect, rather than have a nasty surprise when they actually check app permissions you will see much less brand damage.

So I have just finished off the fantastic Internet Marketing Party/Affiliate Summit Central 2012 recap, and I had one helluva time.

Now that the dust is  settling though, I think it is the perfect time to do a quick high level recap for anyone interested in attending next year.

Atmosphere

In true Texan style, Affiliate Summit Central was a personal affair. the friendly atmosphere and smaller crowd definitely helped develop personal connections with other people in the industry.

Rather than meeting someone once and then never connecting again, you may find yourself talking to the same person several times during the event, and the repeated face time definitely helps create a lasting impression.

The venue was fantastic, and though there was (kind of weirdly) the registration zone for another event at the hotel outside the two main conference suites, it took seconds to get where you needed to be.

Speakers

There were a great mix of speakers at the event, and as always, some painted with broad swipes, others got in to the detail.  The most interesting speaker for me personally had to be Roger Dooley, who’s session left me with a few pages filled in my notebook. Although this was primarily an affiliate marketing conference, the schedule was packed with everything from business management to SEO as well as the core purpose of the event, which was perfect for many people who were there to fill the gaps in their experience.

Attendees

As with the speakers, there was plenty of variety in the conference attendees.  From complete beginners to high level pro’s, I talked to people from all walks of life in the Internet Marketing industry.

Everybody I met at Affiliate Summit Central was passionate about their business, no matter what their experience level.  Hearing about peoples business and how they are (or plan on) succeeding is something I always enjoy!

Booths

The booths were nearly exclusively booked by affiliate programs. While a little more variety would have been preferential to me, I guess this was an affiliate summit, so I really cannot complain about that too much. For anyone who is looking to either sell products through an affiliate stream, or market products from affiliate lists, there were some fantastic networking opportunities here for meeting key people to help you get started.

Service

The service was amazing. Near zero wait time at registration, a great breakfast, BBQ for lunch, and coffee ready to perk you up after the previous nights events.

There was also a seemingly endless supply of soft drinks, and of course free WiFi!

Evening

There were a few parties hosted around Affiliate Summit Central, and all of them rocked.  Music, free drinks, and plenty of networking opportunities  made them all fantastic.  As always, you could easily mingle with high rollers and beginners, everybody was having a good time.

Summary

All in all, Affiliate Summit Central was a huge success.  Everybody had a great time, I personally picked up some great info that I plan on testing over the next few weeks, and I finally was able to put some faces to names I often hear.

If you missed the boat this year, I would definitely pick up a ticket next year,  it is 100% worth it.

For now though, I am going to take a power nap to try and gain back some of the hours lost sleep I have accumulated over the past couple of nights!
